Screenwriter S. S. Wilson Finishes Novel, Tucker’s Monster -- After 30 Years

Zion, IL (OPENPRESS) August 19, 2010 -- "It really was 30 years in the making," jokes the author, who co-wrote the popular films Short Circuit, Tremors, The Wild Wild West and others. After being "side-tracked" by success in screenwriting and directing, Wilson returned to a book he began over three decades ago. The book was officially released on July 22nd, 2010.

The book has already excited readers of all ages, as early reviews indicate. Film director Ron Underwood commented, "As one would expect from a book by S.S. Wilson, there are plenty of twists and turns and surprises." Tucker's Monster deliberately harks back to the style those classic adventure tales. Set in 1903, it chronicles the adventures of young zoologist Gerard Whitney when he is hired by wealthy, eccentric cattle rancher, Harold B Tucker. He is soon caught up in Tucker's passion, searching the world for legendary creatures, with the ultimate goal of discovering a live dinosaur. Wide-eyed Whitney learns about werewolves, mummies, ghosts, and even meets a mad scientist. On a more subtle level, Wilson also pokes ample fun at classic horror movie clichés.

While the prose is light-hearted and the action lively and sometimes tense, the novel also explores the darker side of Tucker’s obsession. Disappointed time and again in his lifelong goal, he becomes increasingly desperate, and his methods increasingly extreme. Unable to sway Tucker from this path, Whitney has sadly decided to quit his job when a major twist plunges them into an unexpected (and Hollywood sized) climax.

S. S. Wilson has written films for Universal, Warner Bros., Tri-Star and more, working with industry greats including Steven Spielberg. He has a long history of turning the familiar into the unexpected. Short Circuit side-stepped movie robot clichés to give us the unforgettable Johnny Five. Tremors was both an action film and a send-up of 1950s monster movies. He continues work in Hollywood, but so enjoys his re-discovered literary pursuit ("I get no notes from studio execs.") that he has already nearly finished his second novel, Fraidy Cats. A comedy romp, it promises to reveal the true story behind what went wrong with Dr. Frankenstein’s ill fated experiment.
